No 1 Halal Products Research Institute (HPRI), Universiti Putra Malaysia

The establishment of the Halal Products Research Institute serves as a one-stop centre or ‘one-stop centre’ approach through a comprehensive, balanced and multifaceted to study all aspects of halal products in national and global levels.

Laboratory of Halal Science Research plays essential roles in conducting research and development of new techniques which are rapid and accurate to ensure the authentication and safety of halal products. The methods that have been developed in the laboratory are chromatography, molecular biology, biochemistry, microscopy, chemical and physical analysis which in the area of involved the applications of various instruments such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID), Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), electrophoresis, 4-Dimensional Gas Chromatography-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer (GC-TOF-MS), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and Electronic Nose (E-Nose).

No 2 The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), Turkey

The Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC), as a sound mechanism for harmonization of standards among the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries and for preparation of new ones, aims at realizing harmonized standards in the Member States and eliminating technical barriers to trade and thus developing the business among themselves. It shall establish certification and accreditation schemes for the purpose of expediting the exchange of materials, manufactured goods and products among the Member States beginning with mutual recognition of certificates.

The SMIIC also aims at achieving uniformity in metrology, laboratory testing and standardisation activities among the Member States and ensuring education and training and providing technical assistance to the OIC Members in the domain of standardisation and metrology. Hence, the Institute may cooperate with other regional and international organisations interested, partially or wholly in standardisation, metrology or related activities.

No 3 Global Data Halal Pool (GDHP)

The Halal Industry Development Corp (HDC) has launched the Global Data Halal Pool (GDHP), the world’s first halal data pool, to connect Malaysia with the international halal supply chain. GDHP will bring together and connect accredited halal suppliers, manufacturers, product service providers, buyers and retailers in the global marketplace.

The GDHP is a collaborative effort between HDC and GS1, adopting standards with portfolio ranges from BarCodes to eCom (electronic commerce tools) to next-generation technologies.

GS1, with head office in Belgium, is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards and solutions to improve the efficiency of supply and demand chains globally and across sectors.

The Halal additives list was established by The Halal Technical Committee JAKIM in 2006, and it has been improvised to match with current EU approved additives.The involvement of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to confirm the status of halal on consumer food products and goods in the country began in the year 1974 when the Research Center of the Islamic Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Office started to issue halal certification letters for products that met the criteria.

Malaysian government through Jakim also became the first entity to register Halal definition at FAO Codex based in Rome in 1980s.

No 6 The Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand

On August 13th, 2003 The Royal Thai Cabinet granted the budget allocated for the establishment of the Central Laboratory and Scientific Information Center for Halal Food Development (Halal-CELSIC) at the Faculty of the Allied Health Science, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, as the core Halal science network of the country. This Halal-CELSIC, to date, has expanded its linkages in more than 10 laboratories based in several universities and institutions across the nation. Halal-CELSIC, later, in collaboration with scientists from several faculties of Chulalongkorn University succeedingly concurred to establish the newly formed “Halal Science Center” (HSC) of Chulalongkorn University resuming all tasks and responsibilities from Halal-CELSIC.

No 7 Research Institute for Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Indonesian Ulema Council

PPOM MUI had been established based on the mandate of the government/state that the Indonesian Council of Ulama (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI) plays an active role in relieving cases of lard 1988 in Indonesia. LPPOM MUI establishes January 6th, 1989 by conducting a proper inspection/examination and halal certification.

No 8 The Halal Index

The Halal Index initiative is a first of its kind. It breaks new ground in the area of pharmaceuticals by incorporating Islamic values and principles. Seen as a pioneer and the foundation for which the Halal Standards for pharmaceuticals based upon, it manages to uphold and maintain steadfast integrity in both its scientific and scripture based use of knowledge and data.

An ethically and religiously conscious set of texts that primarily alludes to the Qur’an & Sunnah, this reference also manages to stay relevant to all fields, industries, religions, professions and lifestyle choices. The use of dung beetles as bio-indicators provide LAW abattoir with reliable scientific evidence that the eco-system of the production site is maintained in a fully balanced state, thus ensuring that the site remains natural at all times. Natural sites must conform to specific health, and environmental standards and assessments are carried out for pasture health, stocking rates, farm management and the environmentally safe use of anti-parasitic drugs.

This scientific evidence provided by The University of Pretoria following farm audits by the university staff and forms part of the audit system of the ISO9001 quality assurance program. No 10 Muslim Consumer Group (MCG) Research, North America

Brother Syed Rasheeduddin Ahmed has been providing the list of Halal/Haram food products to Muslims since 1985. The first Halal food list of Chicago area supermarkets was published in IFANCA’s newsletter in 1985. The first edition of Halal food book “A Comprehensive List of Halal Food Products in US Supermarkets” was published in 1991. The MCG website was started in 2000 and Muslims or non-Muslims visited their website from 160 countries. About 2400 Muslims logged this website daily. This MCG website was developed by Brother Zahid Presswala of LJ Web Management Company in July 2011. MCG consults with Mufti Mohammed Hafeezur Rahman Khan of Huston, TX, Mufti Syed Ahmed ul Quadri of IDEA Dallas, TX, Mufti Mohsin Meccki of Chicago Sunni Muslim Society and Mufti Khalil Ahmed of Jamai Nizamia Hyderabad, India on Sharia rules for Halal foods.

No 11 Sabri Ülker Center/Hotamisligil Lab, Harvard

The Sabri Ülker Center for Nutrient, Genetic, and Metabolic Research was established at HSPH in 2014 with a $24 million commitment from the Ülker Family of Istanbul, Turkey, to support the research of Prof. Gökhan Hotamisligil and his laboratory within the HSPH Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases.

Chronic and complex ladportraitdiseases, especially those of a metabolic nature, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, are the single greatest threat to humanity in this century. The incidence of these diseases has been increasing at an alarming rate in Turkey and around the globe, having a devastating impact on human welfare and global health systems. In a striking paradox, treatment options are regressing, and viable prevention tools have not been forthcoming. Through long-term, unrestricted, and uninterrupted research to develop novel and useful treatments, realizing the translational potential of research, and understanding nutrients at a molecular and physiological level beyond the standards of traditional nutritional analysis, the Sabri Ülker Center seeks to address this unsustainable trend and leverage the revolutionary advances in life sciences towards innovative solutions for this tremendous global health problem.

No 12 International Institute for Halal Research and Training, International Islamic University Malaysia

In response to the rapidly growing Halal industry development in Malaysia, the International Islamic University Malaysia, with its academic and research strength and conducive Islamic environment has established a unique centre dedicated to Halal industry – “IIUM Halal Industry Research Centre” in July 2006. Before the birth of this centre, there were already pockets of activities related to the Halal and Halal industry by academic staff from various Kulliyyahs. But with HIRCen, Halal activities at IIUM become more focus and better coordinated with the Research Management Centre becoming the monitoring body. HIRCen was to play a crucial coordinating role for IIUM’s contribution in positioning and developing Malaysia as the hub for Halal products and services as well as other interested organisations or countries, to become a vital Halal products and services player. INHART is in offering three postgraduate programmes, ie. MSc in Halal Industry Science, MA in Halal Industry Management, PhD in Halal Industry.

No 13 Wilhelm Schulze Research

Wilhelm Schulze (10 December 1920, Leipzig – 30 December 2002) was a German professor of veterinary medicine, director of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover (1966–68, 1978–80 and 1980-81) and a specialist for pigs.

Between 1974 and 1978 Schulze and his colleagues carried out a study incorporating EEG (electroencephalograph) with electrodes surgically implanted on the skull of 17 sheep and 15 calves, at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover University in Germany. The study: ‘Attempts to Objectify Pain and Consciousness in Conventional (captive bolt pistol stunning) and Ritual (knife) Methods of Slaughtering Sheep and Calves’is reported on Islamic websites to have concluded that “the slaughter in the form of a ritual cut is, if carried out properly, painless in sheep and calves according to EEG recordings and the missing defensive actions” (of the animals) and that “For sheep, there were in part severe reactions both in bloodletting cut and the pain stimuli” when captive bolt stunning(CBS) was used. This study is cited by the German Constitutional Court in its permitting of ‘Dhabiha slaughtering”.

No 14 The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell University

The New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a statutory college at Cornell University, a private university located in Ithaca, New York. Led by Prof. Joe Regestein, the college developed 7 projects concerning Halal.

No 16 Halal Pharmaceutical Research, CCM

CCM’s serious commitment to advocating the Halal concept is applied consistently with its Chemicals Division becoming the first ISO certified chemical manufacturer to obtain the Halal certification in 2004 for its liquid Chlorine, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydrochloric Acid, Sodium Hypochlorite, Polyaluminium Chloride (PAC) and Ferric Chloride which are supplied to numerous industries like water treatment, oleochemicals (including edible oil), food and beverages in Malaysia and the international market. Recently in April 2010, additional products of Calcium Nitrate and Nitric Acid were also certified Halal by JAKIM.

No 17 Halal Publications: Modern Compendium of Halal & Halal Guide Book by Global Halal Support Centre

A reference book that explains in details the concept of halal and halal industry, halal certification and management in the industry and the complete supply chain within this fast-growing sector. Contributing writers for these publications include most of the renowned halal experts both local and international. This reference book is published mainly to cater the researchers’, students and lecturers’ needs as the catalyst to produce innovations and development within the halal industry.

No 18 Halal Datawarehousing 

The initiative by GHSC is to integrate Halal related data between various agencies and institutions is due to the fragmentation of data and information and scattered location of Halal associated data within the government agencies. One of HDC business technology approach is to create a Data Warehousing System Project to mitigate the needs. The Data Warehouse system able to process data to be more informative – sense. With this technology, HDC would be able to produce comprehensive industry reports which would be able to measure and report the progress and the development of halal industry in a more holistic approach. To name a few, the system generates the Halal Export report, Malaysian Halal certified companies profiling and many others. Participating agencies are also contributing their aggregated data and to do this, HDC is working closely with other government agencies in data selection, filtration and gathering halal related data.

The Halal Data Warehouse System Project officially launched by HDC in March 2013. To monitor and administer the Halal trade and statistic reports, HDC has initiated the Halal Data Warehouse Project Steering Committee chaired by YBhg. Dato’ Nik Rahmat Nik Taib, Deputy Secretary-General, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). The steering committee meets quarterly, and more than 20 agencies (including JAKIM, Customs and Statistics Department) participated as the member of the committee.

No 20 Halal Vaccine

The world’s first halal vaccine plant will produce all basic types of vaccines for children as well as specialised vaccines for immunisation programmes. — AFP KUALA LUMPUR: The world’s first halal vaccine facility with gross development value (GDV) of RM330 million in Bandar Enstek will put Malaysia as an international player on the vaccine map, once operational in early 2018.

Dr Tabassum Khan, Managing director of AJ Pharma Holding Sdn Bhd, the owner of the facility, said the plant would be developed by GB Asiatic Ventures Sdn Bhd and its strategic partner, China Machinery Engineering Corp (CMEC).

He said the “formulation, fill and finish state-of-the-art facility” placed under AJ Biologics Sdn Bhd was expected to produce over 1,000 vaccines in the country, five years from now.

“With this facility, it will be easier and quicker to export vaccines produced from Malaysia than other neighbouring countries in the region, as the country is also a member of the Pharmaceutical Inspection Corporation Scheme (PICS).

No 21 Hanen Rezgui Pizette Research for ASIDCOM

Ms Hanen started working as a volunteer, in 2007, with Paris and Lille based Muslim consumers` association ASIDCOM, the Association of Awareness, Information and Defense of Muslim Consumers.

She played a key role in its development. She contributed to the most of its activities including publishing articles and scientific studies. The most important study was “The benefits of the religious slaughter for humans and animals” that was published by the French Agriculture Ministry on one of its official websites. The study translated into the English language.

She also published in 2012 within ASIDCOM’s Work an exhibition titled as “Muslim Consumption and Halal Challenges”, and a Muslim consumer survey report; “The Muslim Consumer as a Key of the Halal Market”.
